Religion

Our first unit in Religion deals with how Jesus Christ shares His life with us.  Students will be discussing various saints and special days within the Liturgical Calendar.

Math

We begin fifth grade studying place value to the hundred-millions, fractions, and decimals.  This will build upon their knowledge of place value and fractions which they studying in fourth grade, and will bring them to an understanding of the relationship between fractions and decimals.  Our first test in math is tentatively scheduled for next Friday, September 22nd.  Topics included on the test are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, unit vocabulary, expanded form of decimals and numbers, word form of decimals and numbers, identifying the value of a digit in a number, identifying decimals through models, comparing decimals, and ordering decimals.

Science

The first science unit in fifth grade deals with the scientific method.  Students will discover the differences between observations and inferences, and how to record both during a science lab. 

Social Studies

Our first social studies unit helps students review map skills.  They will review map legends, lines of longitude and latitude, and locating points on a map.  They will then learn about natural resources and energy.  We will discuss the first people of the Americas and how they lived off the land.

ELA

Fifth grade is studying Frindle, an exciting book about a fifth grade boy.  They are also studying cause and effect.  In writing, students have begin planning their personal narratives.  In grammar, they have begun their study of nouns, and in vocabulary they have been introduced to words through a Russian Folktale.  We will have a vocabulary test on Thursday 9-21.

Homework

We will be working on a few projects that will require supplies.  Please continue collecting bottle tops.  Thank you.

Fifth Grade has gym on Wednesdays.  Please send students to school wearing appropriate gym uniforms.

  • Science - complete in notebooks - Find one item in your house, observe that item and record your observations the way we did it in class today.  Be sure to use all five senses, and use qualitative and quantitative observations.  Do not observe any living things
  • Writing - type personal narratives into a document in Word at home.  They should be in draft form only - we have a lot of work to do.  Save them onto your flash drives as "Personal Narrative."  You may save them over the draft we began in school today. Due Wednesday.
